Dressing well does not require a huge wardrobe, constant shopping or following every new trend. Most men can improve the way they dress by getting a few simple things right more consistently.

Start with fit

Fit has more impact than price. A basic shirt, pair of trousers or jacket that sits properly on your body will usually look better than an expensive piece that is too long, too tight or badly proportioned.

Pay particular attention to shoulder seams, trouser length and how much excess fabric gathers around your waist and arms.

Build around clothes that work together

A useful wardrobe is easier to dress from because its pieces naturally combine. Neutral trousers, good denim, plain shirts, knitwear and versatile jackets give you far more options than a collection of individual statement pieces.

If you are starting from scratch, our Wardrobe Essentials guides are a good place to begin.

Use trends selectively

There is nothing wrong with fashion trends, but you do not need to rebuild your wardrobe every season. Take the elements you genuinely like and combine them with clothes that already suit you.

Classic menswear works particularly well this way. The foundation stays familiar while colour, texture, footwear or accessories can make it feel current.

Dress slightly more intentionally

The difference between looking dressed and looking well dressed is often surprisingly small. Tuck the shirt properly. Choose the right shoes. Roll a sleeve neatly. Add a jacket instead of automatically reaching for a hoodie.

You do not need to look formal. You just need the outfit to look like you chose it deliberately.
