The fact is they seem to be called an all manner of things. Here’s just a few:

  1. Newsboy cap
  2. Newsy cap
  3. Baker Boy
  4. Bandit Cap
  5. Apple Cap
  6. Eight Piece Cap
  7. Eight Panel
  8. Cabbie
  9. Jay Gatsby (from The Great Gatsby)
  10. Fisherman’s Cap
  11. Pageboy
  12. Applejack Hat
  13. Lundberg Stetson
  14. Chiz Hat
  15. Poor Boy Cap

It’s very much like the flat cap my Grandad wears, except its much rounder and plump. It’s made up of panels and has a button on the top. To keep the peak upright, there’s also a button that fastens to the front of the hat.

Peaky Blinders is set in 1919, just after The First World War. The hat was popular in Europe and North America in late 19th and 20th centuries. It was often worn by newspaper boys, hence the dubbed name, Newsboy Cap.

Newsboy Hats

Flat caps were very popular among boys and men in the early 1900s, particularly those of a lower social class. Thanks to history books and ‘Oliver Twist’ we know that The hat was worn to work by the lower class but on the flipside, the upper class wore the newsboy hat as an accessory to their sportswear.

Newsboy hats have reemerged as a popular menswear item and can now be found for sale in many high street shops.

Even online.
